Using a Sewing Machine for the first time

Congratulations on your decision to use a sewing machine for the first time! I know that the thought of using a new machine can be overwhelming, but I’m here to guide you through the process step by step, so you can feel confident and empowered.

First things first, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. You’ll need your sewing machine, a spool of thread, a bobbin, a needle, fabric, and scissors and the manual for your machine. If you don’t have a manual, do a search on Google, most of the time, you can download the manual for free. Once you have everything you need, find a comfortable and well-lit workspace where you can set up your machine.

Next, take a deep breath and turn on your sewing machine. Don’t be intimidated by all the buttons and knobs. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the machine, paying particular attention to the threading mechanism. It’s important to make sure your machine is threaded correctly, as this will affect the quality of your stitches.

Now it’s time to load your bobbin. The bobbin is a small spool of thread that fits into the bottom of your machine. Follow the instructions in your machine’s manual to load the bobbin correctly. Or follow these steps to wind and insert your bobbin: 

1. Turn off your sewing machine and unplug it from the power source.
2. Take out the empty bobbin from your sewing machine and keep it aside.
3. Choose the thread you want to use for your bobbin and wind it around the bobbin winder tension disc, which is usually located on top of the sewing machine.
4. Place the end of the thread through the small hole on the bobbin and hold it with your fingers to keep it in place.
5. Push the bobbin winder spindle to the right until it clicks into place.
6. Hold the end of the thread with your left hand and press down on the foot pedal to start the sewing machine. The thread will start winding around the bobbin.
7. Keep your eye on the thread as it winds around the bobbin and make sure it winds evenly.
8. When the bobbin is full, the sewing machine will automatically stop. Cut the thread and remove the bobbin from the bobbin winder spindle.
9. Insert the bobbin into the bobbin case, making sure that the thread is coming out from the top and that the bobbin rotates counterclockwise.
10. Pull the thread through the slit in the bobbin case and under the tension spring, making sure that it’s properly threaded.
11. Close the bobbin case and make sure it’s securely in place.
12. Turn on your sewing machine and test it to make sure the bobbin is working properly.

Use the foot pedal to control the speed of your stitching. Start sewing slowly and gradually increase your speed as you become more comfortable with the machine.

As you sew, make sure to keep your hands away from the needle and be mindful of your fingers. It’s also important to keep your fabric straight and taut, so your stitches will be even and straight.
